The Guadiana River separates Vila Real de Santo António from Spain. This is the most southeastern city in Portugal. It was an important center for the canning industry, but today it is a tourist city. It is a mandatory stop for anyone visiting the castle of Castro Marima just a few kilometers away and anyone staying in Monte Gordo or other beaches in the eastern Algarve. The heart of the city is the Praça Marquês de Pombal, which owes its name to the man responsible for rebuilding the city after the great earthquake of 1755.
The Algarve was violently hit by the earthquake and, while the rest of the region was slowly being rebuilt, Vila Real de Santo António recovered in just two years, due to its proximity to the rival Spanish kingdom, on the other side of the river. The neoclassical layout of Lisbon’s Baixa Pombalina was followed, with a set of straight and perpendicular streets.
