There is a fragrance of serenity and fullness in this journey in Barrocal .
This incredible 21km hike, filled with the scents of the countryside and the breezes of the nearby sea, will make you discover the Barrocal which is characterized by the presence of several limestone elevations of irregular shapes.
Our loop will begin with the small village of Moncarapacho and will allow you to reach, via more or less technical trails, one of the highest points in this region, the “Cerro de São Miguel” (411m). On a day with clear skies you can see from Monte Gordo to Faro, the coastal towns, some of the islands of the Ria Formasa and the immense blue sea.
After the lunch break in the form of a picnic, we will continue along the Barrocal to enjoy an endemic vegetation : olive trees, myrtle trees, carob trees, almond trees, fig trees or some isolated specimens of holm oaks…
Another point of interest is the “cerro da Cabeça” with its viewpoint nestled in the upper Jurassic rock that allows vegetation to grow in the cracks carved by rain over the centuries. We will go down quietly to our starting point, our steps punctuated by the paths of red ochre earth and accompanied by the song of the birds.
