Founded around 1577, Santa Luzia’s story begins with a group of fishermen who built a chapel in honor of Santa Luzia, the patron saint of eyesight.
Originally a hub for hook and tuna fishing, the village evolved into the Octopus Capital of Portugal by the 1920s. Fishermen once used clay pots to capture octopus. A method later replaced by traps that increased their catch.
Today, the village’s fishing legacy remains alive, especially around Barril Beach, where remnants of its tuna past can still be found.
Your visit will offer an authentic glimpse into these enduring traditions, the local lifestyle, and the charm of this coastal community, elevated to town status in 1999.
Just a short drive from Santa Luzia lies Fuzeta. A small fishing village originally named “Fozeta” in 1572, meaning river mouth, after the nearby ribeiro do tronco stream.
Its whitewashed houses and Arabic-inspired architecture cascade gently toward the sea, creating a serene and picturesque setting.
Nestled between Olhão and Tavira, Fuzeta preserves its peaceful fishing charm while embracing a more relaxed, modern rhythm.
As you stroll through the village, you’ll sense the connection between land and sea that continues to shape life here.
The tour wouldn’t be complete without meeting Francisco Eugénio, a fourth-generation potter from Moncarapacho, born in 1958.
Francisco’s story is one of deep-rooted passion and family tradition! As he fondly says, “Clay was my Playstation.”
From riding mule carts to collect raw clay as a child to shaping it into beautiful works of art, Francisco has kept his family’s legacy alive through his craftsmanship.
At his workshop, you’ll witness firsthand how Algarve pottery reflects both creativity and cultural identity. A living art passed down through generations.
